A Week of Prompts: Saturday

To round out our week, one last book:
The Write Brain Workbook: 366 Exercises to Liberate Your Writing by Bonnie Neubauer

Unlike A Pocket Muse, which has essays and help mixed in, The Write Brain Workbook is straight-up exercises all the way through. 366 of them, so you don’t even have the Leap Year excuse. The book page has space so you could write right on the page, and another question at the bottom that prompts you to “Take the Next Step”: how could you carry this exercise into your ongoing writing?

The prompt:

My Condiments to the Chef!

    mayonnaise mustard soy sauce
    pickle relish
    ketchup hot peppers

Use all of these words in a piece that starts:

His taste in women was . . .

Take the next step:

To make Russian dressing, you mix ketchup, mayo, and relish. List three pieces of unfinished writing you can combine to come up with one new completed work. Try it!

(See the actual page layout here)

One place to purchase is the Book Depository—they have free shipping.

What’s the Week of Prompts about?

Ann Marie Gamble has been putting pen to paper since her mom made her scrub the crayon off the stairwell walls (one chapter per step). Although there is plenty of inspiration to be had in the carpool lane, she likes writing her way across the galaxy as well as across town, and she especially enjoys research missions (aka family vacations) when she and the boys can get away. Her favorite place to write is a room with a view and a pot of tea.
